Surge Philosophy
When choosing a summer baseball program, players have dozens of options to choose from. Often times they will join an organization with a high expectation, yet end the season with dissapointment because what was originally promised was not delivered. Some programs which have been successful in the past now use that reputation as a means of charging absurd fees in order to generate profit. Other programs start off with a reasonable roster size, then add players following the original tryout limiting playing time for players, yet maximizing profit. Some organizations also forbid players from using private instructors, insisting that they instead pay for lessons from their program instructors.
That said, there are other programs besides the Midwest Surge that do a good job of developing high school age players and do so in an admirable way. Despite every organization claiming that their organization is superior in every category, the fact remains that there are many viable options in the area.
Instead of bringing down every area program, Midwest Surge asks that you look at our team philosophy and make your own judgment about how we prepare area players for a higher level of baseball.
College Recruiting
Midwest Surge Baseball is superb in terms of working hard for their players in finding opportunities for them to play in college. While every organization has connections, the Midwest Surge staff will spend countless hours exploring multiple opportunities for upperclassmen. This way, our players can play in college programs that fit their needs. Other organizations only explore opportunities for their top players, however, Midwest Surge takes pride in working hard for every player on our roster. We believe that any player that is good enough to make a Midwest Surge varsity team has the ability to play college baseball. We just demand that they live up to our high expectations.
Wins vs Losses
In evaluating a team's performance, a team's record is often the first thing people take into account. However, Midwest Surge does not evaluate its success by its record. Some tournaments have better competition than others, meaning a team's record is often correlated with its strength of schedule. Ultimately we do expect to be successful in terms of our wins-losses record, but our evaluation of each game is determined by our on field performance and whether or not we meet our pre-determined goals. The talent level of our opponent will vary depending on the tournament, but our players are expected to execute the in-game goals in order for the coaches and organization to consider a game to have been successful. This ensures that our team and players are mentally focused, improving their baseball instincts, executing fundamentals, and ultimately improving individually every time they take the field.
Playing time policy
Playing time is a reasonable concern for all players and parents when choosing a team. Midwest Surge's policy is what is to be expected from any competitive program, yet we believe it to be fair.
Obviously, playing time is not going to be equal. That said, every player will receive adequate opportunities to prove themselves. We do not bring in players simply to ride the bench- if a player joins our program, he will have the opportunity to earn playing time based on his performance and the way he conducts himself.
With every age group, Midwest Surge offers "Pitcher Only" spots to certain players. This means that a player might make the team, but as they're told after the tryout, their role will be as a pitcher and not a position player. This affects the amount of players we keep on a roster.
Please note- Beginning after the 2015 season, Midwest Surge will announce a roster-limit guarantee.
Why are we doing this?
Midwest Surge aims to provide an extremely competitive schedule and environment for players. We also aim to do this at a reasonable price. All of our coaches are compensated for their work. However, their compensation is nothing in comparison to the amount of time they put into developing their team. Our prime focus is to help young men mature through developing their skills in the sport which we are all passionate about, while also working hard to explore college opportunities for them.
